Official explaination, or Jed Mea Culpas

Just so everyone knows, I responded to a request from Mr Tenk to close comments on the post about Steampunks chat.  I chose the setting for Disable Comments, and found out much to my chagrin and horror that this removed the comments that everyone had made.

I want everyone who posted, and replied that this is not the Magisterium spiking your opinion, or censorship of the board.  This was a board mod trying to take care of a very active forum at work while trying to do said job.  This was not intentional, but it was me making an incorrect choice.

These things happen. Its good of you to explain! I’m sure you felt absolutely awful when you realized.

I’m going to take it all as a sign from the Universe that we should stop all the inhouse-bickering, think about the things that were said, and move ahead with perhaps a clearer, and more thoughtful approach to our methods of chatter and communication.

At least now we know the difference between those two settings. The more you know, right? Knowledge is power! Don’t beat yourself up about it.

Thank you for posting this explanation. I, for one, am pleased to see the discussion retired. Many with an investment in the discussion already have weighed in, and it did run the risk of becoming a soap box upon which many could reach out and beat any number of dead horses. (I don’t mean to diminish anyone’s interest or concern with my comment—please note I said it “could have become”, not “was certain to be”.) I read along with every comment, and found many of them to be insightful.

Here is my own, personal digest from what I perceived to be the most salient comments:

The Steampunks of New Babbage group chat list is intended primarily for OOC information and occasional social interaction. Comments and interaction intended as New Babbage roleplay should be performed in open chat, in the appropriate portions of this forum, or in more isolated messaging (perhaps a unique group created for that purpose). The Steampunks list is open to the general public, including non-age-verified individuals; it should therefore be viewed as part of the first impression our community can leave with any potential citizen. With the understand of these and other considerations, please be mindful of comments posted in group chat.

To you Jed, and all other moderators here and in-world: Thanks for treating this subject seriously, and in my perception, rationally.

I do think the comments are still there they are just hidden (although don’t know why they’d just disappear like that). I think if you made it read only they may reappear but I don’t know as I haven’t tried it yet.
