Not quite a trip to Grandma’s , part 2

That crazy old bag shot the tall, creepy guy in the sewer!

Reliable Barthelmess’s heart beat like a runaway steamhammer. The man was scary-ugly but neither he nor the other one had attacked first. They had just been talking, but Reliable hadn’t really heard what they were saying. It sounded all gruff and growly-like.  The two long-haired sewermen talked funny too, like the woman – with all kinds of big words and flowery language.

After the old lady shot the sewer monster she had grabbed Reliable by the collar and dragged her up out of the sewers before the second sewerman could chase them – not that he would. Rather than lunge at them he had screamed once then fallen in a heap on top of the one who had been shot. Weird! This whole thing was weird, weird, weird.

Reliable led the woman through the streets, much faster now than before they’d crawled into the sewer. It was only a few minutes before they’d reached their destination.

“They should be in there.” Reliable pointed at the front door of the Mnemonic Institute as they finally approached their destination. The old lady still held her roughly by the collar.

“Go in,” Nefertiti instructed. “Deliver the letter to either Moonwall or Pizarro, preferably both. Tell them I am here.”

Nefertiti then lowered her hood and smiled at Reliable with a horrid, monstrous grin. She leaned in so close her lips almost brushed the messenger’s oversized ear. Her breath reeked with a powerful acrid rankness that hurt Reliable’s nose. And that croaky rasp! It gave Reliable a cold chill causing her fur stand on end and her right foot started to thump uncontrollably upon the ground.

“Such a sweet little bunny,” the woman hissed. “Your task is almost complete, dear. And then you will be free of my protection. Find the two fathers. Tell them Nefertiti is home.”

“Great Builder be buggered!” Reliable exclaimed then quickly covered her mouth. “I didn’t mean it,” she said looking around frantically at who could have overheard. The freaky old lady then released her grip upon Reliable who turned and quickly ran inside the building.
