New Spitalfields photographs discovered

Many of you will have seen a few of the “Spitalfields Nippers” photographs of children in London’s infamous rookery taken at the turn of the 20th century by Horace Warner. Most people thought there were only a few photos in existence. However diligent research has uncovered two albums containing hundreds of previously unseen photographs.

The book Spitalfields Nippers is due out in November. Perhaps something to put on your letter to Steam Santa.

Oh, that’s going to be truly fascinating. Lewis Hines visited the South around 1908-1910 and took many images of children working in the mills. Very haunting, very telling.
