After weeks of trying lots of idea’s to no avail, I finally came up with something I’m happy with.
So…. my new home is currently under construction in Clockhaven, er, above Clockhaven :)

*looks up*
iz a long way to fly for cookie raids…
I think that might be the point – to be a cookie-miser.
*shocked look*
that iz not very neighborly…
*shares her cookies with miz skytower*
ooh… thankee!
*looks upward*
maybe it be raining cookies soon…
All I can say is “Dun dun Dunnnnnnnnnn”
*grins evily at flying tower* mehehehehehe >:]
Would have never thought of a flying tower. Instant thumbs up in my opinion.
Might this be a hazard to airship navigation? I hope not, it is an impressive looking addition to the New Babbage skyline.
Hmmm….I don’t know. I’m not sure that qualifies as having even mad-scientist level physics. I wouldn’t count on that staying up once the Clockwinder gets a good look at it.
I think I would have made it three floors, rather than five, as it looks like it will capsize in more than a light breeze at the moment.
O_O Well…It’s highly impressive on the outside in my opinion…Wonderful work. I hope to find more (bioshock infinit) floating buildings of this sort around SL. Maybe a mobile city of sorts or just a sim with some low prim moving buildings like this.
It’s the height it is so that the top is out of the clouds, having then roll through your living room is rather unnerving. I have been toying with moving it up about another 40m or so and then I could remove one or two floors as the top would be well above the clouds … also the balloons are way smaller then I wanted at first as I was unsure if bigger ones made the whole thing look too huge. I could add 4 more the same size maybe. And I do have some big propeller modules that can go on it to make it look more plausible.
My first plan was for floating platforms with low buildings and tree’s but all above the clouds. Then I tried this and one tall but slim tower worked.
As for it stretching the mad science end of things, you have to assume it’s actually a light weight building that looks normal from the outside as holding that much masonry up would be tricky. I was going for the same look as the game, hence the proportions and appearance of weightiness. The airship above the port is equally implausible, as it’s got two relatively small airbags and 16 big oil tanks, so would never really be able to fly as it’s too heavy.
well, somewhere in the steampunk wiki (i think i found it there) are “steampunk metals/alloys”…for the most part theyseem to be ultra light weight…could just say thats what it is XD
Throw in some cavorite modules for instant steampunk physics!
This looks a little too impossible, honestly.
The new bioshock game trailier!
Thats where ive seen something simmilar! It was annoying me all last night, now ive figured it out XD Really nice build Amber, and your the first one ive seen do this!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1Wp6mQ6fyc&feature=related
that’s wat I was about to say, it looks like the buildings in the air cityfrom the new Bioshock
I’d suggest maybe more airbags, possibly some at the top, or even larger airbags, since it does look fairly top heavy and likely to tip over, but impressive eitherway
Cool! Grendel has his own video game. Ha ha ha!
Ooh!
Saw that and was totally enthralled… and a wee bit nauseous…
A great trailer!
I have to say commentary on that sight is right funny, tho not friendly to genteel persons; but the description of the Gyro Captain made me laugh hearty.
That’s the key point….there’s only so far you can stretch the “magic” of steampunk.
IMNSHO, while it’s a lovely build, it looks *far* too heavy for the amount of visible lift.
maybe it’s trying to land :)
I’ve just doubled the number of balloons and burners at the bottom, ignore the old set they are hidden under the sea for the moment hehe. Looks more buoyant than before, any better ?
Honestly no. Unless it’s filled with unobtainium or Made-in-Caledon it wouldn’t have even remotely close to enough lift.
Also the lift is from the bottom so it would make an unstable pendulum.
i completely agree, mr. spires.
flying houses have always been hard to get past covenant (i’ve grounded 3). if anyone can do it, amber can. back to the drawing board!
Putting a big, giant, massive gyroscope inside wouldn’t make it more stable (and more fun)?
and exposed, of course! hmm… that could be really fun
I don’t know that much about Caledon – what would being Made-in-Caledon have to do with it? Do they have some really light bricks?
many of Caledon’s buildings incorporate Cavorite in them to make them slightly floaty
Really? Where? The only sims in Caledon I’ve done any real exploring in are Cape Wrath (I wandered there thinking I was still in Winterfell) and Victoria City. I don’t recall any floaty buildings in either of them.
checkout steamsky city sometime (it’s a few 100x more impossible to get in the air than any floating gasbag towers) and then there’s the Cavorite mines in Caledon Moors where they get the stuff
cavorite, common in caledon, it is difficult to obtain in new babbage. you would not believe the export taxes they impose on the stuff. thier hording of a good thing has forced babbage engineers to be ever so much cleverer to lift their abodes off the ground.
Thats definitely an improvement, with the extra balloons.
Stick two big arms out from the bottom with a couple of high revolution propellers for that extra “ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” look, but yeah, with those extra balloons it does give it a more even look and more lift :)
Just got through inspecting it inworld. Very nice. And since everbuddy’s a expert, perhaps something to stabilize the top a bit? Seems you might get seasick what with all the waving around, or, at worst, spill your tea?
It’s hard to tell how much better 8 balloons looks for real when you can cam around it, a single picture doesn’t capture the difference properly. Thanks for all your comments it’s nice to get help and advice. Keep um coming as they say :)
I’m sure after a little more fiddling and poking it’ll turn out ok. The propeller pods I made don’t really look right on it unfortunately, I tried them just now and they just look odd on it. I did try the rugby ball shaped balloons the buildings have in Bioshock Infinite but they didn’t look at all right here without the same textures and lots of cables etc.
I’ve put it up over 1000m …. problem solved.
Rather than 1000m why not make it shorter and place it with the base at cloud level, use the 8 balloon base and I think it would look good as a sky house. Thats just my thoughts though, Mr Tenk is the one to talk to, but I don’t think the concept is a complete loss.
maybe a longish part hanging under the btom would help stabilize it, just something like n antenna, or pipes from all your drains even
“it’s raining dishwater!”
::giggles madly:: I like that idea!
I think it’s an elegant build, it just needs more believable support and stabilization. But when you get right down to it, hot air is pretty difficult to balance as it takes so much just to lift something light and small like a basket. I’d been thinking about that since Friday, what it would take to lift say a pirate ship if a massive balloon only carries a little basket as is.
Funny thing! I took a picture from about that same angle as the first one up there the first time I saw it!
I think with something ONTOP of the building to help keep it stable it may be more plausible (such as bags or propellers) but I love the whimsy of it!
I’ve had times in the past with airship’s on my land of clouds coming through, usually going over them, or just under them does help
How about adding a great big old rusty anchor ?
I think its stunning, physics be damned.
The problem with this is …. it’s ment to look somewhat implausable … thats the whole point. Whether it’s too much for babbage I don’t know.
Advice and constructive criticism is fine and welcome, but I get a sense some people hate it from the very spiky comments they have made, rather than make any useful suggestions on how to improve it.
Bah, I’d make/buy one if i could…maybe put it over 1000m in some instances, but I love it…I like the idea of odd/random piping hanging down below it, maybe a small gasbag on top, or piping on top pointing in 8 directions for steam/flame release from the engines below…sort of a way to push the roof away from the direction its swaying to keep it semi stable, while using a small gasbag to keep the top up for the most part
don’y know about anyone else, but I like it and like to see more like it
mostly my suggestions were just in the mind of what would Tenk not nuke
Wow how many rooms is that?
Ah laike dat building a lot. Why not jes’ put it on de ground?
If Tenk says it’s okay, then it’s fine with me…
*puts on aviator helmet*
Prepare for da cookie raiders!
:D
*Joins with Miz Skytower for a cookie raid*
Ms Ilsker, I do not think the comments made have meant to be spikey. Some folks just have a brusk way about them, and mean no harm. Might I make an elegant (I hope) and physically correct suggestion? If you hang a rigid rudder on the base of your building, it will stabilize your edifice. It should be “x” shaped, two large thin plates joined at their center lines at right angles of sufficient size; the combination of a downward vector of modest mass and aerodynamic stoppage should do the trick! The Rudder can be decorated to your taste.
As to rasing it to the 1000 m mark, I think it would be a shame to hide your candle under a bushel, as it were; provided, of course, it receives Mayor Tenk’s imprimatur.
Good thought Mr. Valeska! I still like the steam/flame vents for the roof from the engines idea i tossed out…be a good way to correct leaning in all directions via the vents
This isn’t gonna work, it would have to change so much it would be something completely different from what it is now …. back to the depths of the sea for me I think.
Life is better under the sea…
Personally I liked it as is. It looked very fitting yet at the same time impossible… and something fun to explore.
