Not an anthem, mind you, but a theme song…
My favorite version of song only: http://youtu.be/b1YHL2E2sR4

On the thought of dance sequences for Babbage, may I suggest ‘Step in Time’ from Mary Poppins?

We’re being attacked by Hottentotts! Cheeky devils! Give ’em what for!
Mary Poppins was better in the original Ravilan.

hmmmm….. suppose Voles in the Sunlight doesn’t quite capture the essence… but possibly the Anvil Chorus?

Of course, it’s difficult to capture the total optomisim with the knowleged of everyone outside that the roof is about to fall in… are there any tunes that have this core of insane light surrounded by iminent disaster? hehehe
A great question, Tepic. If we don’t find one, we’ll have to compose one.
In the meantime, here is a bit of Verdi’s song, in English, only slightly edited…
So, to work now!
Lift up your hammers!
Who turns the [Babbager’s] day from gloom to brightest sunshine?
His lovely [New Babbage] maid!
Fill up the goblets! New strength and courage
flow from lusty wine to soul and body
Well . grins another one .. (( for show tunes ))

Good one!
It brought to mind Bjork’s “Cvalda,” from the movie Dancer in the Dark. A song and dance number performed in a factory!

Clatter, crash, clack
Racket, bang, thump
Rattle, clang, crack, thud, whack, bam!
It’s the clatter machines
They greet you
And say
We tap out a rhythm
And sweep you away
A clatter machine
What a magical sound
A room full of noises
That spins you around
As long as we get Julie Andrews to play Ordinal Malaprop, i’ll be happy.
and this one. http://youtu.be/zxY2wky6oZ4
“garage sales are for wimps that don’t own sledgehammers”
When I wander around the city, the music that comes to mind most often is from the “antique beat” artists known as The Real Tuesday Weld, led by Stephen Coates.
I would like to nominate as a New Babbage theme song, from the saga of the Clerkenwell kid, The Life and Times of the Clerkenwell Kid
Here are a few other examples of their finer work: a cover of Lady Gaga’s Poker Face (it’s way cooler than you might think), a cover of Abba’s The Day Before You Came, Bathtime in Clerkenwell, and Last Time in Clerkenwell.
Not a fan of musicals. ((exception: Dr. Horrible’s Sing- Along
Blog ))
If this abomination was to be made, I recommend
The Watchmakers
Apprentice by The Clockwork Quartet.

I’ve always imagined that The Protomen’s Megaman-based Rock Opera takes place in a future Babbage. The second act (chronologically first in the series) is kinda set in a dieselpunk industrial world (babbage in 20 years time)
The Protomen: Act II: The Good Doctor
Dr Wily:
Tom, listen to yourself
And listen carefully to me
If you replace the working parts
You get a different machine
The man who turns the wheels
They will follow wherever he leads
We’ve spent our whole lives searching for a way to make a better world
Giving everything to them, asking for nothing in return
Well here it is, a chance to take back everything we’ve earned.
I like to imagine that Dr Wily is actually Dr O. The whole story seems like something he’d do.
Act 1 on the other hand is industrial progressive rock,
The Protomen: The Sons of Fate
In the epic climax the two super-fighting-robots fight debate the merits of saving mankind..
Human Choir: He could not save himself.
How could he save us?
For all the blood he shed, (Megaman: As I live)
Your brother failed us. (There is no evil that will stand.)
There’s nothing you could do. (And I will finish)
You had no choice. (what was started:)
Why do you cry for him? (The fight of Protoman!)
You are our hero.
You are our hero!
Megaman: You are the dead.
I often imagine myself as the hero in this part of the story, throwing away my heroic persona because I’ve had enough of it all.
