New Babbage Flora, Fauna and Food

New Babbage seems to have a number of creatures and dishes that make semi-regular appearances.  The ones I’ve been able to locate in the archives are:

  • wiggyfish
  • voles
  • vole milk
  • air kraken
  • srizzle snakes
  • New Babbage chowder

I’m curious if there are others that I haven’t yet stumbled across?  How about sea kraken?

What about plant life?  Are there any growing things in New Babbage that are consumed?  (Other than cinderberries, which I recently introduced.)

What about beverages unique to New Babbage?

How about imports that are usually only found in New Babbage?  (Such as Ravilan wine.)

In particular, I’m interested in things that are edible or could be edible if one had a strong constitution.

I feel like cooking.

Spread the love

Rodents of Unusual Size, usually just called “rats” or “ROUSs”. We had a pretty severe infestation of them nearly six months ago now (or sometime around then).

I’d imagine they are a meat staple for those than can: A.- Catch them without losing a limb. B.- Stomach the unique…flavor, yeah that’s it, flavor of the meat.

    • Junie Ginsburg Junie Ginsburg August 26, 2011

Oh, my goodness.  I didn’t realize we had ROUSes in New Babbage.  One would likely need a *very* hearty constitution for eating those.  Bleh!

I’ve seen Vernian shrimp offered by the crate at various locations around the city.

The wilderness north and west of Babbage is home to Yarbles.  Them’s sorta like a deer or an elk, but  weirder lookin.  Longer skinny legs and red glowing eyes, but don’t seem dangerous otherwise.

I never saw such an animal back home.  I shot one, his head is up in the Bucket, behind the bar.

    And there’s Billybumblers too.

I’m almost hesitant to ask, but what’s a billybumbler?  And is it edible?

I’ve seen the Yarble in the Bucket – never knew that’s what it was!

Well, you can’t go wrong with fresh vole, though vole stew is more to many peoples’ tastes, the voleauvaunts got a mixed review…..

Vole milk is avaliable, as is vole butter and vole grease (often the same stuff….), of course, vole milk is the basis of the highly alcoholic vole airag…

Errrrr….. don’t eat the rats, rats eat anything in the sewers, and too many of our ecentric scientists are a little careless in disposing of failed experiments….

Wot do you mean, there are other things ter eat beside vole? You tried wiggyfish?

Don’t forget Myrtle’s Sleepy Scones, a well-documented cure for bouts of conciousness.

    And that tasty Nom Candy!

    • Kimika Ying Kimika Ying August 26, 2011

I’ve tried the Nom Candy, wide-eyed innocent that I was when arrived in the city. Perhaps it is an aquired taste.

      • Kristos Sonnerstein Kristos Sonnerstein August 26, 2011

I find myself rather partial to the nom candy. Particularly when busy working and thinking within the shop.

Wiggyfish are delicious!  Particularly when kippered.

I should point out that Srizzlesnakes are not native to New Babbage; they were called here, and some seem to have remained.

Clockhaven has clockwork mice, but they are too crunchy to eat being made of clockwork.

The useless tree counts as a plant, but its also too crunchy to eat being made of wood.

There is a carrot in the carrot garden, you would think that should be tasty, but alas it is also made of wood.

    • Kimika Ying Kimika Ying August 27, 2011

And look here, (waves around what looks like a delicious-looking peach) even this basket of fruit is made of wood! Is this some kind of cruel joke?

There used to be a special variety of chocolate truffles, when the back room at the CocoaJava was actually a candy shoppe called Truffles and Tribulations.

I could be persuaded to put out the truffle jar again somewhere, I suppose.  The Bob chocolate is especially rude, but the Sea Breeze is rather refreshing and spinny.

I also sold Eye Candy (yes, your worst fears are probably correct). It’s still available in Cafe Curiousity in New Toulouse.  Hmm.

      Truffles!  Mmmm…

*is curious from what creatures the eyes originate*

Our famous Builder Brothers Fruitcake. It is most palatable after a week long rum soak. If you get too much of it as holiday gifts, you may desire to leave it unsoaked and use it for brick.

I sell canned and fresh whale meat, blubber, and aged Ambergris. Though these are not New Babbage specific foods.

    • Junie Ginsburg Junie Ginsburg August 27, 2011

That’s alright, just trying to get a good idea of what kinds of ingredients and…uhm….cuisines are available around here.  Whale is important to remember!

    • Tepic Harlequin Tepic Harlequin August 27, 2011

      can i resist? errrrrrr…… no… sorry!

Urchin 1: I eat whale meat and blubber!

Urchin 2: Cor! So would I if I had ter eat it!

      Tepic ducks and runs…..

    clockwork finches in Wheatstone.

and iron pengi, though they’re less a fauna, and more a force of violence and destruction

    Miss Ginsburg –

In combing through the archives recently, I came across this document that may inform your request: http://cityofnewbabbage.com/reader/node/788 Only a few of the species listed are described as edible, although I suppose that would change if you were hungry enough. Or Bob.

When I first came to New Babbage last summer, I paddled the waterways and dove into the deeps to see what locally found fish  could use for sushi.

In the Vernian sea, I found many fish certainly not common to New Babbage alone.

    Turtles

    sardines

    marlin

    jellyfish

    squid

Though I also was surprised to find a coelocanth in my explorations. Though the few

Babbage exclusive fish I came across were:

    Wiggyfish(of course)

    Canal brooder

And Surfaecum Babbagiticus Masticatus (The Jimmyfish, I believe)

  16. Gabriell Anatra Gabriell Anatra August 28, 2011

Ah, yes, I’ve run across Jimmyfish on a couple of occasions and recently a rather large Canal Brooder. The Wiggyfish and marlin are good eating, though the marlin wins that particular contest rather handily.

I’ve run across evidence of spiders in the deep sections of the underground. Large webs, that is, but not the spider itself. Considering it must have been the size of a small dog I’d rather not, I think.

Mmm… cinderberries. Though, if all berries in new babbage have soot on them anyway, shouldn’t they be called sootberries?

  18. Clara Corryong Clara Corryong August 29, 2011

The Clara Corryong Carbonated and Caffinated Cordial Company produces “New Babbage Cola” a drink so named for it’s brown color and secret recipie (rumor has it the secret ingredient is copper.) Also in production is the “Homemade Lemonade” which is a misnomer as it is made in a labrotory and not a home.

I am legally required to inform you also of the rival company “MoonPop” also exists and that their beverages are ok and totally not poisonous however MoonPop is made in steelhead so doens’t count.

Cala Mondrego Coffee – Now priceless and a collectors item i would say. I still have a Chai cup from “chai me up” and it remains one of my most treasured items.

(sort of a local item as its one of the crates offered in the babbage building kits. Perhaps someone could try growing some coffee plants in a greenhouse?)

As to local animal life….there are pirhana in the sewers.
