May 30 – Where the Wild Things Are – Part 2

“Oh, Kasa. I’m so sorry.” She put a hand on the rabbit-Moreau’s shoulder, carefully and sympathetically.

“I… we need to get him off the street,” said Kasa, looking dazed and holding her arm. “But… that wolf… that cougar… what’s going on here? And whose sister?”

Bookworm sighed. “I don’t know.” She looked down at the prone, lifeless form of Dr. Viper.

When they got inside, the Captain realized why the facility had not been reopened yet. The construction on the interior walls was showing, and some of the wiring had not yet been completed. Most of the proper furniture had not been moved in; instead, temporary seating arrangements for the work crews had been put into place. Sadly it seemed that everyone had already gone home for the night. The one saving grace was that there was a telegraph key in the front lobby that could be used to send for help. Thankfully, the response from the nurses on staff was quick.

As they were moving the body inside, Bookworm said to Kasa, “You do need to take care of yourself, too.”

Kasa blinked, and said softly, “I will. But I am tougher than I look.”

“I’m sure you are,” replied Bookworm kindly, “but you don’t want to get any infections.” She steered Kasa to a nearby chair, making sure she sat down.

“I know.” She pulled out a carrot cigar from her pocket and put it in her mouth, looking around at the half-finished hospital. “Gonna have a lot of paperwork,” she mused. “We now do not have a head medical person.” She was lost in thought for a moment, then said abruptly, “I’ve never seen that cougar before. Or whoever his sister is. No clue why he kept rambling about it.”

“Kasa… I think that cougar is who attacked Wisp.”

The nurse turned toward Bookworm, eyes wide. “Wait… what?!”

“Earlier today,” Bookworm explained, “Wisp agreed to be hypnotized, to see if we could get any more information. Under hypnosis, he drew a picture of a bear Moreau and a cougar Moreau, and he identified the cougar as the one who attacked him.”

Kasa nodded thoughtfully. “Yes, but if her was a normal Moreau, that bullet would have stopped him.”

Bookworm filed that away for later pondering. “Anyway, I think they’re looking for Lilith. Indeed, in the picture Wisp drew, they were wearing belts like the one Lilith wears.”

Kasa blinked. “True. I saw it on him. Do you know where Lilith might be? I have not seen her for a while now.”

“No, I don’t. I’m hoping Beryl might. But I need to find him soon anyway. If that cougar is going after anyone who spent time with Lilith… he’ll be in danger, too.” Bookworm frowned. “Many of the urchins could be. Or Moreau.”

Kasa nodded. “And Wisp? He might now know Wisp is alive still.”

“Yes, you’re right.” Bookworm frowned again, trying to think of everyone who might be in danger.

Kasa abruptly stood up. “Now that you mention it, I did… wait here.” She hurried out, before Bookworm could say anything, and in only a few seconds returned, holding a belt in her hands. “I saw this was knocked off the cougar during the fight.” She studied it closely, and pulled out one of the vials it contained. “I… I have some of Lilith’s meds from when she was in the hospital I… I can test it, or have it tested, to see how similar these are to it.”

“A good idea, Kasa.” Bookworm smiled, trying to reassure the nervous Moreau a little.

Kasa, however, tensed as one of the nurses came over, bandages in hand, ready to treat her wounds. “Well, we will have to get things going and ready here,” she said as she sat down. “I mean, losing one of our doctors like this… and we are not even ready. I will try, though. I have a bad feeling about the months to come.”

Bookworm patted her gently on the shoulder again. “Hopefully it won’t be as bad as that. You’re sure you’ll be all right here?” At Kasa’s nod, Bookworm took her leave, hurrying off to the temporary Militia headquarters to make sure all members were looking for the two Moreau Wisp had drawn – especially the one who had killed Dr. Viper.
