I want to make a deck of cards for the game of Tarot, (not divination). “The New Babbage Tarot”. Of course, Mayor Tenk would be the “Emperor” card… this would be a perfect shot for that…

I would need pictures for the court cards (King, Queen, Knight, Page) of the standard suits (Batons, Cups, Swords, Coins), as well as for the 22 Trump cards…. I have several people in mind for the various Trump cards, but I am open to suggestion and volunteers. Some cards may require a group photo, so you could appear several times in the deck.

Some of the Trumps may also be re-interpretted for our fair city (An Airship or Submersible instead of the Chariot, a Gear of Progress rather than the Wheel of Fortune). Again, this is to be a fun deck for playing the game, so I do not feel the need to be too strict to the themes used in divination. I am open to suggestions on variations. The standard Trumps (also called the Major Arcana) can be seen on the Wikipedia

Anyone interested in posing for the deck, please contact me…

Ezra Crumb the Second is the Emperor.

      • Mr Underby Mr Underby June 13, 2011

I would then suggest Miss Tripsa as Empress, since she is allegedly his niece.

      • Dr. Cyberusfaustus Dr. Cyberusfaustus June 13, 2011

Well, then, perhaps you can be the Heirophant… or maybe, we make a new “Mayor” Trump.

        • Mr Tenk Mr Tenk June 13, 2011

tenk would probably be the hermit. he wanders thru the city at night with his lantern winding the clocks.

underby is the devil. he caters to your vices.

    • Mr Underby Mr Underby June 13, 2011

I do, by the way, love this idea.  I know a bit about Tarot, so if you need any help, give me a shout at the Bucket of Blood.

    • Stargirl Macbain Stargirl Macbain June 13, 2011

I think either of the Underbys would make fine a fine Tower or Death, since the appearance of either indicates a potentially catastrophic turn of events.

I, obviously, would be The Star (*giggles*).

For Tenk (though he would argue otherwise…) I’d suggest the Magician, since, whether he admits to it or not, he tends to be the one who is controlling all of us quietly in the background and wields immense power over the city (ban-hammer!).

      • Mr Tenk Mr Tenk June 13, 2011

i’d go for doc O, or even an image of the old lighthouse, for the tower. the magician is hands down Loki Eliot. in the story, he’s an early character you meet, one that shows you the possibilities of what is ahead.

and now i’m going to open a thread to talk about this. and wonder why i know so much about this having rarely touched a deck or been into that kind of thing…. guess i’m just that visual. this is going to be a hell of a who’s who discussion, i think, and fun!

        • Mr Underby Mr Underby June 13, 2011

Mr Loosestrife would make a good Tower, as well.

        • Stargirl Macbain Stargirl Macbain June 13, 2011

Actually, on that account, Loki should be The Fool, since he both begins and ends so many cycles in our life. The person at the start of the path, as it were. Both in the scope of the city (wot wif him being a founder and all) and in the sense of the stories he tells sending us all out on fantastic journeys.

    • Mr Underby Mr Underby June 14, 2011

Perhaps we should leave who is who in the card system to the person or persons putting it together.

Surely I am not the only one uncomfortable with the idea of people claiming “this card is ME”, yes?

      • Arnold -Gager- Arnold -Gager- June 14, 2011

Perhaps we should give a character description to the people putting it together and let them decide what card should be assigned to that persona if any.

I’m wondering though if they’ll replace some of the cards names with things more Babbage esque.  The Knight would be an Officer?  The pentacles would be cogs or clocks?

*Edit*  Ahh, he said as much in the above post and I had forgotten since then.

(( I don’t think Maddi qualifies for a card. ^^ Or maybe the two of swords.))

Edward and I appeared as “The Lovers” in another Tarot deck…not sure where that was for.  It was a lot of fun.

  4. Heliotrope Lionheart Heliotrope Lionheart June 13, 2011

I’m sure Blackberry or Gilhooly would make a fine Page of Something.

According to this I need to be the Queen of Swords:

Upright – A complex, courageous, intelligent woman, who may well have suffered some deep sorrow or loss.  She is concerned with attention to accuracy and detail and can skillfully balance opposing factions to meet her own needs.  She has attained inner wisdom and a sense of truth.  The cards is one for women who have overcome adversity especially at the hands of men, to obtain a state of grace.  The ability of women.

Ill Dignified or Reversed – Sorrow for the sake of sorrow.  A card of wrongdoing as a reply to adverse circumstances.  A deceitful, sly, intolerant and narrow minded woman, expert in the use of half truths and quiet slander.  A formidable enemy due to her subtlety and sharp intellect.”

First, the sleeping Tenk makes me want to put a wee blanket over him so he stays warm

Second, a tarot deck is a grande idea!

In my humble female opinion, the evil, bespectacled doctor would make a fine “Fool”, “Hanged man” (once underby is done with him), or Devil.

I, on the otherhand, would be glad to lend my visage to any of the cards calling for a fair-haired lady, such as the Sun, World, Justice or Temperance cards in the Major Arcana.

    • Giles Berithos Giles Berithos June 13, 2011

You flatter me, madame, but I surely am not cunning enough to be the Devil.  That honor should be reserved perhaps for Dr. O.  The hanged man, on the other hand, would probably aptly describe my condition once the LLL is done with me.

Doctor O should be the magician, as he can make some amazing devices.

  8. Jedburgh30 Dagger Jedburgh30 Dagger June 13, 2011

    I’ll take Justice, or Death.

  9. Bianca Namori Bianca Namori June 13, 2011

I think I would enjoy Death more than you would Ms. Dagger…being so Just and all…

    ohh Temperance  for breezy :)

Temperance is almost invariably depicted as a person pouring liquid from one receptacle into another. Historically, this was a standard symbol of the virtue temperance, one of the cardinal virtues, representing the dilution of wine with water. In many decks, the person is a winged person/angel, usually female or androgynous, and stands with one foot on water and one foot on land.

    or Fortune … heh :)

Tes can have one side of the card, and I’ll take the other, because I am also The Empress.  :-)

*Finishes off the bottle of rum, then hits the sailor in the head with it*

Is there a Helper Monkey card? I might be interested…what…no Helper Monkey card in the deck?

Maybe I need to come up with a New Babbage drinking game?

    • Bianca Namori Bianca Namori June 15, 2011

To be fair…it IS national drinking month…
