Going to the Devil

More fun than I have had in fortnights! I had parked my Go-Devil at the ice fishing shanties a few days before, after testing out the race route and such. Got there early for what I figgered would be a prime position in the race, so confident I was in my skills with that rough handling diesel burning whirligig. The flag falls, we all take off. I am doing fairly well, third or fourth place going into the second turn.

Then disaster.

I broke through the ice in the very corner of the canals. Miraculously the engine did not breath water or stall out, and I was able to slam it into reverse and allow the prop to become a screw and push itself backwards out of the water. I wound up facing backwards and had to get out and, with a great lurch of strength and hobnailed boots, turn the cumbersome beast into the right direction. The rest of the way was not so bad, but it was remarkable the number of hapless contestants upended, upside-down, entangles and dismounted I saw as I passed.

Included is a likeness of me on my way to the starting line. Last year I got lost in the courseway and did not finish. This year, at least, I finished. I have decided starting in the back of the pack is a viable strategy. I aim to win next year.
