For the Times, They Are A’changing (Journal August 25, morning)

Journal,

I shall have to write quickly for very soon Kaylee and I must start the work of getting the Bakery sorted out, but I shall try to make this as quick and concise as possible.

1) Have heard a rumor that Pip has “vanished.”  This has been mentioned frequently over the past week but I have yet to confirm it.  I have reason to doubt, as Brother Lapis did express some curiosity in the matter still.  I had one moment of guilt because Mr. Tenk was standing there.  I know the conclusion he will draw, it cannot be helped.  I hope they do catch Pip.  I hope they put him someplace to be forgotten. I hope he loses HIS leg and HIS eye (pencil punches through the paper causing a small tear here…)

2)  While admiring the newly referbished building next door the group I was with got to talking.  I expressed a desire to have Mrs. Underby out of my building, but lamented that I did not know anyone who would take-up her position as baker.  That is when Kaylee mumbled about having once run a bakery herself!  She is indeed one of my greatest friends!  Several others also volunteered to put in some hours if needed.  Last night, while she was out, I put all of her things into crates and met her at the door.

Yes, of course I had a moment of guilt.  Her things were so…normal.  She has been sleeping on the sofa in there, and had so few things.  But, she is an Underby.  And I must remember what Pip said…

3) I am still undecided as to what to do about Underby’s mother.  I have hidden the skull away where no one will find it.  I sometimes like to sneak away just to look at it and remember the trembling fury in Mr. Underby’s eyes when he accused me of having stolen it and the cold calm with which I replied to him.  I have half a mind to take a hammer to it and mail it back to him in pieces.

While I do not know what I shall do with it, I do know that so long as it stays in my possession he will have to limit himself in his retaliations.  Not even Kaylee and Jed know where I have hidden it, if something happens to me, he will never see it again.

Well, it is time to get to work on the bakery and get the Gangplank ready to open for the day.

I am reminded of my mother’s advice : If you intend to carry off your plan you don’t announce it to your opposition 30 minutes beforehand, you just do it and deal with them afterwards.

As long as you have the skull he’ll be after you. Even if you did give it back he’d still be after you. If he does succeed in getting you he may also get the skull. I’d quietly destroy it, perhaps by incineration, that way even if he does win he’ll still fail to win it back.

Spite? Why yes, but sometimes bitter and sweet go so well together.

(( I love this one. It’s really starting to shake things up. ))

it takes a very high temperature to incinerate bones completely…then again the Badger has asked for a crematorium for his graveyard…
