Curiosity got the better of me. It was a slow day at the library so I peered into the back of the Flash Fiction contest mailbox.
Entries for the annual flash fiction contest are always impressive. Many creative writers in this part of the world, I’d say.
There must be a mistake. The mailbox should be full of stories. Where are the contest entries? Oh, this isn’t good.
The deadline is in four days. I can’t tell Miss C that the mailbox was empty this morning. She mentioned that we have some excellent entries so far, but surely there are more to come.
I hopefully look around for those of you who intend to enter this contest. Better get those stories in.
stands on his toes to peer in the mailbox
this just won’t do. what was the theme again?
Hands Mr. Tenk a notecard with a few items hastily scrawled
Wind up Key/Keys
$5000L purse 1st prize
$2500L purse 2nd prize

shakes his head at the card and goes to count out his poker winnings
i can match that.
I can definitely try my hand. Does it have to be Babbage related?
((And who do I turn it in to, and how do I turn it in?))
It does not have to be Babbage-related, just steampunk. It’s flash-fiction, so no more than 600 words. Put your story on a notecard, and drop it in the appropriate mailbox in the Burton library.
600 words or less on the theme of wind-up keys or keys. Working on getting the blog page with the full rules blog restored right now.
Until the page is restored at the BAR, I’ve had it at ceejaywriter.com for some time.

Thank you so much, Ceejay! I shall duly repost it, and it being restored will not be so important.
Happy to help! Especially since I’m one of the footdragger entrants, myself!
(this is totally normal! With Prim Perfect magazine, we get zippedy doo dah from our writers until deadline day and then WHAMMO. And we try to give everyone a generous amount of time! It’s just how writers are wired, methinks.)
mea culpa. mea culpa.
Notecards can be placed in the mailbox at the library or handed directly to Canolli Capalini. All I ask is that you put RFB4 in the title of the notecard, so I can find it in my 30k+ inventory..

Most writers agonize RIGHT up to the deadline, so I’d expect you’ll see a surge in four days!
*eyedart*
Including mine. I’ve had a personal struggle with the theme, but dammit, I will BE there.
((Don’t worry. I started tonight. I should be done sometime tomorrow to type it into the notecard tomorrow night. XD *note the should.XD*))
I am ahead of the power curve this year for an original. Last year I took an old thing I’da started afore the contest was announced and tried to retrofit it into a theme. First time at flash fiction at that. What a trainwreck. What I was sure would meet the critera weighed in a 800 words. Dangnation! The knife came out and the bloody corpse that resulted would not scour.
So few days ago I took a fresh idea and applied the theme, and the whopper makes 200 words. This year I need a trowel…
And….. my notecard shall be delivered to the library this very evening! Something quite a bit different than my usual notions.
I’ll have a notecard to deliver tonight, too!
Skunked agin…
((I’m all finished writing it. I just have to go in-world and type it up, and put it in Burton’s mailbox.))
When do we find out the winners?
Well, I have to read them first, Ms. Forsythe. However, that shouldn’t take too long, I expect within a week.
I am sure you will have a very enjoyable week ahead of you reading all the entries!
May I inquire the number of entries?
The total count is 15, sir.. though I’ve been told that another piece may be on its way (ineligible for judging of course). I’ve also been told that my theme this year may have been a bit .. less open for interpretation.. than past years have been, which may have proved a difficulty. I should have something posted by Sunday at the latest.
