Babbage – Roleplay OPTIONAL

Will this cause drama?

Mood i’m in right now…i dont really care….

Breezy’s monthly gatherings for me is a chance to sit back, kick off my heels and spend a couple of hours dancin with elle and having light hearted banter with the other folks who are dancin away.  It’s a chance for me to forget about the hotel, the lab, the half sim sized timelord station and the dr who sim i run.  I go there to have fun.

Today in breezy’s ball i was having fun, until the closing hour.

New Babbage is supposed to be roleplay optional…

There was two different roleplay scenes that was going on right in the middle of the dancers, they wasnt forced on anyone and anyone could join in, i passed a few in character remakrs and observed one of the roleplay going’s on and as i went back to relaxing and dancing with elleon…what would happen?

I got forced into one of the roleplay threads.  Not just forced, but forced in such a way that i had to materialise a TARDIS infront of the dancers during the height of the party which now within the confines of New Babbage basically shouts out to the entire city…

“HEY! THAT MORNINGTON BLOKE IS A TIMELORD!”

There can be no plausible deniability of it now, the folks who actually knew of Morningtons little secret or who came across Mornington materialising one of the various TARDIS exteriors was happy to be given one of my famous ‘plausible deniability’ lines.  Not this time though, this time the technology was there for all to see and was even mentioned in an off chance way by the person who forced me into this roleplay in the first place…

…Baron Wulfenbach…

Any kind of credible hiding of the timelord side of things is now totally and completley ruined.

The fact that I dont force the time travel or the ‘instant get out of jail free’ parallel travel to my advantage in Babbage means that I know when not to cross that line.

Instead, i find i was now forced over that line…by someone who should have damn well known better.  I could have simply said no..but the end thread of that particular roleplay line was the age old “ohhhhhh the city is going to be levelled by an explosion” type deal…yeah, saying no to that would have made me really look good.

Here’s me, commander of the largest Timelord Orbital Station in Second Life, former interim president of the largest roleplay timelord group in Second Life, co-owner of the oldest Doctor Who sim in Second Life, who has managed to work around the whole timelord aspect of my character in New Babbage, who has managed to even cut down the amount of “HAI im Da Doctor” idiots in New Babbage…now having his RP character layed open for what he actually is…in public, during a time i’m supposed to be relaxing, in a city which is supposed to be roleplay optional.

There’s irony for ya…

Spread the love

    Victor,

I really do hope with all my heart this most unfortunate incident, will not prevent you from any future visits to Piermont ,I am  so Sorry !!

    Sincerely Breezy

I might be one of the only ones, but I completely missed it. (But then someone had already told me about the Timelord thing in front of you a week or so ago)

Still. I don’t think anyone should be dragged in againt their will into any roleplay. I’m in character 99% of the time, but if someone doesn’t really want to be, I’ll respect that.
(Granted, you have to TELL me, or I’ll assume you are ifyou’re in NB, but that’s just be being thick.) And you shouldn’t have to reveal information you aren’t ready to or don’t want to.

Rowan you were not the only one that Missed it ..

I promise most did Miss it ..  Unfortunately That is not the point ..

The point is Each of Us some more then others put a great of work  IE time and effort in their Characters !!  It is not asking too much to respect one another  first !

This has always been  a Most Powerful trait  for New Babbage !

New Babbage has always had an Excellent reputation for  Respect for the Character and  Respect for the Build !

Its horrible that they dragged that in. I saw the start of that conversation on my alt, I didn’t stick around long enough to see the result. The one thing I love about your role play is that we can giggle about the… there is no such thing about time travel. I mean basically by forcing it out, it really ruins that funness of things… things that, to me, makes Steampunk the ability to deny things that shouldn’t be that are. Its the fun whimsy of things, lately New Babbage seems to be taking out more Whimsy. People point to things and say “Thats not scientifically possible!” News Flash… Its not suppose to be!! When we came here there was so many oddities and curious brow lifts that it made our heads spin and lately it seems like a rule book is being slammed down on everything you do thats not era or scientifically correct and it saps the fun out of things. All of our tea parties will try to be about that whimsy I see Steampunk to be.

I am sorry that he took that from you Victor… that should never happen and I hope that these sort of things don’t ruin New Babbage for you.

-Let me adjust something… when I mean of Era.. I don’t mean like flying cars in the 19th century.. I mean like Airships and other odd things… I hold firm on the entire 19th century thing….

Now that the cat is out of the bag can you give me a ride to Cardiff? (A.K.A. the Temporal Nexus of the Universe)

Just like participating in Role Play is optional, so is accepting someone elses Role Play as cannon is optional. If I was required to accepted every silly and half baked role play in this town I would have left a long time ago. As far as I am concerned your secret is still safe.

What you should really be concerned about people shouting out to the entire city…

“HEY! THAT MORNINGTON BLOKE IS A SCOT!” ;)

I’ve honestly been waiting for something like this to happen for a while. The RP side of things in Babbage has been getting stronger and more prevalent and the non-RP people are getting tired of it. I don’t think there’ll be “RP Free Zone” signs put up in Babbage just yet but I don’t think they’re far off.

Mr. Mornington, I hope you’ve spoken to the Baron and made your displeasure known. But as Captain Cad has pointed out, you could have easily told them to go away. The rest of us would have easily ignored Babbage’s destruction by the fact of it still being there afterwars (assuming the Lindens don’t break the servers again).

I think there’s a growing number of people who need to relearn that drama in RP does not require them to become drama queens (and before you ask Victor, no I don’t mean you.)

As I’m hiding under the sea to escape the mad clockwork postman Unit 27 I did not see this event, but maybe we could just pretend it did not happen. After all this is roleplay and not real life, if the authors wish to go back and make the occasional edit then that is fine by me.

    • Yang Moreau Yang Moreau October 25, 2010

Exactly! Where I come from, we call it mun-fudge. You fudge it up, the mun says “Didn’t happen” and it’s fixed.

I must have already left when that happened. Things seemed to slow down and I was tired, so I headed off. Never saw any of it myself. All I saw was the bit with Mr. St. Croix assaulting Miss Witt.

  9. Zaida Gearbox Zaida Gearbox October 24, 2010

I didn’t see you rez your TARDIS either, Victor.   I think I might have gone to bed just before it happened.  I was aware that there was some RP going on that was supposed to be all dramatic.  I was wondering, “Why are they doing this in the middle of a ball?”  Most people seemed to be making a point of ignoring it.

Someone can say, “Unless you do something the end result will be that the city is destroyed…”  But, unless that someone is Mosseveno Tenk that is a hollow threat.  Here is how the RP could have played out.

RPer 1:  Unless you do something the entire city will be demolished in 10 seconds.

Mr. Victor:  Oh well, we could use some new builds anyway….

RPer 1:  Here goes.  I’m destroying the city.  I’m doing it.  I really really mean it.  BOOM!

Mr. Victor:  Oh look.  The city is still here.

Entire City of Babbage:  *points and laughs at RPer 1*

I think that all things considered everyone is more than willing to pretend that it didn’t happen.

I have to admit, I was surprised at the number of roleplays happening at Missus Breezy’s ball last night, particularly since they are generally so terribly casual when it comes to RP.  It’s a good place to hint at a new relationship or make a new conquest, but, given the size of the place, usually not a good place to host a major (or in this case, several major) roleplays.

Given the nature of the two characters that you were dragged into it with, Vic, I had already planned on pretending it never happened.  In fact, I should say that if you say here “it didn’t happen” then, frankly, It didn’t happen.  I thought they were being stupidly forward about the whole thing and a touch intrusive (of course, perhaps the RP happening on the other side of the room was equally intrusive, but I didn’t hear much of it because half of their group was out of chat-range for me, so, like a good party goer, all I know is that there was a hubbub on that side of the room, nature unknown).

Anyway, that is my two cents, or three perhaps.  You may expect a bill soon. *grins*

    A couple notes…

First, I didn’t see it, so I’m quite happy with it not-having-happened.

Secondly, there is *no* such thing as being forced into a role play.    You always have the option to say no.  Yes, your name can be dragged into some RP, but participation is always up to you.

If someone tries to drag you into something that you’re not comfortable with, say NO, via IM or public chat, or however you please!

    -Doc

dthat’s what I keep telling people, you’re not being forced at gunpoint, you can say no

eitherway, I wasn’t even at the ball so never saw it, so could easily not have happened.

and worse case scenario, just go to the future, steal one of those Men in Black memory wipers, and wear shades

I know I openly admit to being a Timelord and all, but the whole city dosnt know (unless i missed a memo?) about it…I do call upon the TARDIS in public, but thats to invite someone into my home or for a trip…and above all, the perception filter stops anyone else from seeing it anyhow…to in reality…most of the people there may have heard it, but more than likely saw nothing while standing a few feet away. And on that note, the exterior playes a massive role too. I have a babbage steam grate and immigration booth in my inventory, in other words, you’ll walk riiight on past it. So I say Mr. Morrington, either dismiss it to only two or three people whom saw it (RP purposes), make a city wide note (scream) that it never happened, or involve the celestial intervention agency and make it never happen (perhaps not that last one).

This kind of brings things turn about to the whole “clique” idea of New Babbage. Seeing all the aweful godmodders, marysues, and Janezeros, that are in this world really puts to a whole perspective as to why people “stick to the inner circle” despite the timezones.

But as Grendel said…no one is MAKING you do anything. You can say NO or No THANK you. Those are very crystal clear signs of someone who doesn’t want to play…

But in all honestly, this is SL not RL…aren’t you kind of playing a role anyway? Isn’t that why WE are in New Babbage? To escape? Learn? Chitter? Socialize?

Even if it is just the Sims on steroids for the lot of us, you can still CHOOSE.

Frankly, I can also see why some RP’s don’t go anywhere. People are too afraid of being “disconnected” if they do. I’m not talking about totally out there RP too. Just not cookie cutter, I’m all mighty stuffs…

The more I progress in my own little fun and games with some amazing people…the more I worry if I’ll get “griefed” myself.

But dear good Victor…do NOT fret. So much was lagaliciously going on that night I doubt anyone BUT the two snares noticed anything…but yes, I would tell him of your feelings regarding the matter.

  21. Elina Koskinen Elina Koskinen October 25, 2010

    Oh dear…I feel for you.

There is a reason why I (and Mr Holmes) hide most of the time -.-

I have learned to say “no” very clearly if the ongoing RP is not something I enjoy…one option is to walk away from the situation, but that could be a bit unfortunate especially during an event like the ball that is meant to be relaxing and fun, yes :(

  22. Mr Tenk Mr Tenk October 25, 2010

I’ve always thought the light rp chatter that goes on at the balls is a great way to introduce new characters, find people with similiar interests to rp with for a while when you find you are in the mood to join a plot.

the names i’ve heard thrown down in this incident are people that are more than a little overboard with their characterizations to the point many people will not take them seriously. Some people don’t undersand “no” when you say it to them. i do my best to say no politely, but there are a couple of persistant avies out there that have to be told in no uncertain terms what you mean, and why, and i’ve come to the point where it does not bother me to have to go there anymore.

and victor.. you actualy managed to rez something in the middle of ball lag? your kungfu is mightier than i ever imagined!

  23. Ceejay Writer Ceejay Writer October 25, 2010

Victor, you had a plot-point forced on you with no prior consent or discussion.  You’re a good guy, and so you went along with it but you did not need to!   I’m rather glad I didn’t notice this going on (I may have already left by this point) – but as others say, you don’t need to validate bad roleplay.

Roleplay may be optional in Babbage, but it’s prevalent. And people should study up on how to roleplay well and intelligently.  Yes, I know, ‘reading is hard’ but suck it up and learn what the heck you’re doing, people.  then you can have more fun!

  24. Zaida Gearbox Zaida Gearbox October 25, 2010

I don’t think that there’s any rhyme or reason as to why what happened at the ball happened.  The events leading up to this happened in Steelhead, so why was there a need to act out the “dramatic conclusion” in the middle of a Babbage ball?  I also think that it could have been a lot worse than it was – as in to the point of having to involve moderators and hit ban buttons.  So, thank you, Victor, that you did go along with it and it was able to end relatively peacefully.  But, in the meantime – everyone seems perfectly content to pretend it either straight up didn’t happen, or it was part of some strange dream.  So, let’s just leave it there.

    Herr Mornington,

I found out about this second-hand, and appreciate your discretion in your annoyance with me.  Do forgive me for not realising that your ‘I’m not a Time Lord’ dialog was serious when I have been as much as surrounded by those who identify themselves as Time Lords and mention your name in glowing terms.  I tend not to realise the glaringly obvious is not so for many.

You were not the only one I called on for assistance; the other apparently did not hear me.  Again, I greatly appreciate and appreciated your prompt response at that time.

None of the instigators considered that they may have disrupted the plans of others – such as the interruption at the most recent Salon as another example.  This is a result of free will, plans going awry and other foibles of human existence.

I did not come to Piermont Landing expecting to have to dispose of the threat of exploding clanks, but that is what I was handed – that and the punch-up on the opposite side of the room.  Allowing my hostess’s ballroom to be vapourised seemed declassé and the sign of a poor guest, and therefore I acted.  You also acted in the way you felt right at the time.

I am who I am.  Do not expect me to be less.

    Yrs.,

    K. Wulfenbach
