An interesting kind of building material was produced in the first half of the 19th century by the “Artificial Stone Company” owned and invented by Mrs Eleanor Coade
The surviving examples have held up very well, and show a smoothness of texture that isn’t seen with portland cement from later on. The process was apparently very labor intensive, and therefore didn’t lend itself to more than decorative use (though I wonder, if the steam revolution had picked up faster, if more attempts to automate the mixing of it might have worked out before builders turned to cement).
