An attack on one is an attack on all…

The moisture was soaking through his trousers from the wet grass but he did not move. Slowly, very slowly he crawled forward until he could see the doors some 100 yards away. Rolling onto his back he reached into his breast pocket and opened the folded cloth revealing the tiny lead pellets. He winced as the odour from the shot, fermented in rats piss overnight, drifted up to his nose. The slingshot primed he rolled silently onto his knees and waited.

The man’s brain was just beginning to register a whistelling sound as the intense pain ripped through his cheek, knocking him staggering backwards as he reflexively bought his hands to his face. Dropping his cane, he fell into the doorframe and slumped down groaning.

Anger rose within the man like lava erupting as through the tall grass he glimpsed movement. A small sillhouette disapeared over the rocks and slid down the short cliff to the path below.

The echo of childish laughter gradually faded around the canal….
