A new Frontier

Brave adventurers are required for a new program of discovery and exploration!

The New Babbage Aethernautical Survey is recruiting Astronomers, Pilots, Engineers, Scientists and Pioneers of all kinds to voyage above the skies.

The first phase of the project will be the establishment of a permanant manned facility on the surface of the Moon. Automatons have laboured for the past two months making ready the habitat for the Survey crew to live and work in. The facility at the sea of Tranquility is already near completion.

From this launch pad, phase two of the project will seek to construct and launch vessels which will soar forth into the Aether, exploring the space around this globe, and discovering the mysteries of Venus and Mars and beyond!

Fearless individuals of uncommon skill are sought to join this endeavour. Candidates for positions should contact Maltheus Canis to discuss possible roles within this exciting venture.

Spread the love

reclaim the old rfl one from the filthy martian scum’s tentacles?

unless people have still been there, I lost track

Ummmm.  Is this different from Herr Tigerauge’s project?

(No, this would be using the build I made as a base for rp, its the same moon base. Im not gonna live in it so somebody has too :P)

Ah have discovered a method of travelling through the aether using a railway locomotive travelling through a feild of megnetism projected by large rings. If ah could find a sponcer we could establish some for of railway between the colonies we set up in space….

only thing is we need to lay out those rings first….

    • Maltheus Canis Maltheus Canis January 21, 2011

Hmmm. As intriguing as your space railway notion is, there are two very obvious problems with it. First, the sheer distances involved. At minimum, Venus is some twenty five million miles from the Earth, and Mars lies at closest around thirty five million miles distant. Even were you to need only one ring per mile, that is a lot of rings. The second issue would be those distances and the directions are variable, since both planets are orbiting at incredible velocity around the sun. It would be like constructing a railway between two cities that continously shift about at high speed in relation to each other.

In short, as imaginative as your idea may be, I think rocket ships would be far more practical for exploring the solar system.

The most difficult part of building the railway is according to my notes, setting up the system. Once set up, with a booster ring ever 10,000 miles and projectors at each end, the network moves along with the rotation of the planets, kinda like a rope being towed. The feild of magnetism that moves teh train also rotates the line along the planet’s orbit.

The first railway will connect the earth with the moon, just to see if it works. At the moment it isn’t viable to send trains anywhere else. Unless there is regular travel needed quickly then there is no need for a railway

chances are, once this train is built, a young boy and a pale woman in a black coat will ride it, and cause all sorts of problems for the conductor,

There may also be an army who ride arund in a UnionPacific Big Boy…

::facepalms:: I can see it now.. Might she be of lovely long blonde locks and watery jeweled eyes?

        • Clara Corryong Clara Corryong January 23, 2011

Maybe, maybe not. Either way the explosions will be very well animated and there will be a giant cannon involved somewhere.

My engineer assisstant, Major Philipp Oldrich, is interested in such an endeavor. He is a clockwork, with a mechanically assisted heart, an internal phlogiston generated source of oxygen and augmented eyes which allow him to see various spectrums of light.  His skin is a combination of leather, metal, ceramic and wood. He was involved in a rather horrible airship crash, and his humanity consists mainly of his brain, circulatory and skeletal system, and various muscles and essential remaining organs in his trunk.  His liver, as it happens, is assisted by a system of filters and artificial membranes powered, also, by the phlogiston coils.  He is quite suitable do difficult environments.

Thankyou Mr Valeska. The Major does indeed sound precisly the kind of person we need. Possesing skills with machines and able to withstand the harsh enviroments of the aether. Im sure he would be a most valuable member of the survey crew.

I guess we could setup a portal link…

    • Maltheus Canis Maltheus Canis January 22, 2011

That is a most generous offer Miss Falcon.

An aetheric portal to the moonbase would indeed be very usefull, especialy for moving the materials needed to construct aetherships up to the facility. I will get the coordinates for the arrival point to you as soon as I have set up a suitable arrival area.

    Mr. Canis,
As you have been there to help me when I was in a bind (particularly after that nasty zombie infection) I would like to volunteer my services to help in the survey mission for you. Consider me and my “airship” at your disposal.

  7. Glaubrius Valeska Glaubrius Valeska January 22, 2011

Mrr Angkarn, can you rig your airship to function in the rarified atmospheres, like a vacuum lift system or suchlike?

    • Orpheus Angkarn Orpheus Angkarn January 23, 2011

In fact, it CAN be rigged to withstand a vacuum like environment. Its amazing what a little sealing wax can do ;-)

      • Glaubrius Valeska Glaubrius Valeska January 23, 2011

        Good old spit and beeswax!

Having overseen the basic outfitting of the base, I now have a better idea of what posts need filling to get the facility operating. We reqiure the following personel

Base commander. Someone with leadership qualities who can handle a crisis in a hostile wilderness like the moon.

Scientists. Expertise in the luminiferous ether or astronomy especialy would be valuable, but other fields would be considered.

Physcian. To oversee treatment of any ailments as well as research medicine in low gravity enviroments.

Security. Possibly a militia member who could serve on attachment to the base.

Engineer. Incharge of maintainance and repair to the bases hull and internal machinary.

Once the first of our aetherships is ready for service, additional crew will be recruited to man it, with similar roles. To apply for one of the above posts, or to suggest other roles I may not have thought of, please send me a notecard with your details, and a little bit about yourself.

(( That was brilliant XD. I thought it was going to be about the old tabletop rp game of that name, but that made my day, thanks for sharing :D)
