Nov. 18 – News of Summer Happenings

Bookworm hurried up the steps leading into the hospital. On entering, she saw Kasa seating at the desk. The rabbit looked up at the sound of her entrance. “Oh, good evening. It is good to see you again.”

“Good evening, Kasa,” Bookworm replied. “I received a message that you wanted to speak with me?”

“Yes. Wisp came out of his coma, and… well… we asked him a few questions, and might have found some clues to his attacker.”

“Ahh, good.” Bookworm pulled out her notebook, remembering finding the lad in the wreckage of the collapsed tower back in the summer. He’d borne injuries both from the debris and from a probable attack. “What can you tell me?”

“Well, when he came to, he indicated that his… attacker… was an urchin named Lilith.”

“Lilith?” Bookworm was startled, remembering how the girl had helped her during the problems with Rasend. “Could he tell you anything else?”

Before Kasa could answer, they heard the sound of someone approaching, and both looked over to see Dr. Viper coming down the hallway. “Captain,” the reptilian medic said. “That is your new title, isn’t it?”

“Well, interim,” she replied.

“I was just informing the captain of what little we know so far,” Kasa put in.

“Let me make this simple for you, Ma’am,” Dr. Viper said. “Wisp has singled out Lilith as his attacker, using his notebook. You may speak with him yourself about this; he is awake.”

“Yes, that might be a good idea.” Bookworm followed him upstairs and down a hallway to the ward where Wisp was resting. She looked down at the small figure lying in a bed. “Wisp?” she asked softly.”

Wisp twitched his ears and opened his eyes. Seeing her, he sat up, his paw momentarily going to his stomach. He smiled a little. “How do you feel?” she asked him softly.

He winced a little as he pointed to his stomach, where his feeding tube had been. He also lifted his lifeless tail, which had been crushed by debris. Then he pulled out his notebook.

“It was Lilith who attacked you?”

The boy tensed, then slowly nodded. He turned to a page with a drawing of Lilith leaning on her staff, then to another of her in the same pose, but looking more wolf-like. Bookworm pointed to the latter image. “She was like this when she attacked you?” she asked. Wisp nodded and lowered his ears.

“Do you have any idea why she attacked you?”

Wisp shook his head, looking down.

Bookworm laid a careful hand on his shoulder. “All right–thank you. Rest now, and I hope you feel better soon.”

Nodding weakly, he lay back down, carefully getting comfortable again. Bookworm saw him settled, then quietly left, going back down the lift. She thanked Dr. Viper and Kasa for their help, and trotted the short distance to Militia headquarters. An alert would have to be sent out for Lilith to be questioned as soon as possible – something she wasn’t looking forward to.
