2011 Oiling Festival

The Oiling Festival is a steampunk answer to spring cleaning, when we halt the factories to clean out the grit and grime of the previous year and perform our annual maintenance. All good citizens and visiting steamlanders are encouraged to roll up their sleeves, show their national pride,  and participate! The original Oiling Festival was held in 2009 to add needed items to the city inventory and invite the greater steamlands to experience the Babbage way of life for a week. The drawbridges in Wheatstone Waterways, the city tartans,  naval jack, the Sea Gate, and the palettes of bricks that appear at every build site and the crates of goods on the piers are all artifacts of previous Oiling Festivals.

Festival opens at noon, Friday, March 18. Building stops at noon on Saturday, March 26 so we can all get cleaned up in time for the RFL kickoff at the Carnivale Ball at Piermont Landing, and begin judging.

Part of the fun of Oiling Festival week is watching the builders while they work and learning new tricks from each other. You are strongly encouraged to work in place if you are considering going for the large build contests.

    IMPERIAL FLAG.
sponsor: Father Pizzaro and the Church of the Builder
    prizes: L$ 2000/1000/500

As we dig into our past, we learn more and more of the Old Empire. While Babbage was not the capitol city, the Imperial era left an indelible mark on our culture. But what did the flag of the Old Empire look like? What were the colors they wore? Design a flag that represents the Imperial Past, and hang it on the wall at Tomahna Hall. 1 prim. You may include a notecarder in your entry to describe your choices.

      1st – Verlia Bilavio (#6)
2nd (tie) – Tanarian Davies (#13)  and Osric Worbridge (#9).
The judges all commented that Mr. Worbridge’s entries would have done better if he had not used the eagle, which was too specific to existing european countries. It is requested that the 3 finalists go a second round.

    HONKING. BIG. MACHINE.
    sponsor: Aeolus Cleanslate
    prizes: L$ 3000/2000/1000

There’s a certain sense of awe one gets when watching a monumental engine go through its paces – whether it’s the massive pistons of an ocean liner’s engine room or the elegant, massive power of a beam engine pumping water. So build one – it does’t matter what it does, but it should move, be noisy, and be huge. An HBM will fit on a 25×25 meter platform and be no more than 100 prims.  Entry limited to platforms available. One entry per person. Build only on city provided platform.

Group 1: Builder’s Square, in front of the Academy.

1st – Kaylee Frye: This “RUN FOR YOUR LIFE” between the gears made the judges giggle, and shows off not only the comical aspects of being a good mechanic, but also how sometimes it really takes getting “into things” to do a good job.

2nd – Palabra Puddlegum: What makes an oiler? Detail, complete attention to detail. Not only does she show a close interest in the machine she’s trying to oil, but she even added a rather nice frame the ties in the peice in color, and composition.

3rd – Tepic Harlequin: Where would we be without the children of our future? And with the clumsy mess that Tepic has shown in his artwork, I think this is a GREAT example of the future of oilers everywhere in New Babbage. Worried yet?

Honorable Mention – Brother Riddler: One judge noted that Malus’ heroic pose while his friend did all the work was a telling commentary about the inner workings of the Church. Others found this a nostalgic portrait of the crazy times you had with your best friend and *that car*.

    BABBAGIZATION
    sponsor: New Babbage RFL
    prizes: L$ 1000/500/250

Once again the RFL kiosks have been uncrated at the Port, and once again, we find may not modify them. Is that going to stop a Babbager from living up to the city building code? No! We’ll build around it!  You may use up to 15 prims. Judging will be strongly influenced by the amount of donations each kiosk receives.

    IMPORTS/EXPORTS
    prizes: L$ 2000/1000/500

What does the city of industry export? What do we import from the other Steamlands? Whatever it is, it should be stacked in crates and pallets along the waterfront and on the freight platforms. Make a crate or other object of export. Limit 5 prims per object. Limit 5 entries per person. Entries will be full perm and may be added to City inventory, and placed in the Engineer’s freebie object giver at the close of the festival.

sponsor: The Blue Angel All Night Wafflehouse in Seraph City
    prizes: L$ 2000/1000/500

In the future, not too many decades from now, people will not go to plays at the theater, but instead stare at a wall showing a shadow of a play… how very strange! And stranger still, the plays will be about… us.
Make a movie poster from the silver screen era (1920’s and 1930’s) as if you were to make a movie about plots, characters, or situations from our beloved steamlands. You do not have to make it about New Babbage, but you must make it about one of the steam nations of SL. Selected entries will be permanently displayed at the Blue Angel in Seraph City.

    WINDMILLS
    sponsor: Mosseveno Tenk
    prizes (large): L$3000/2000/500
    prizes (small): L$ 2000/1000/500

Last week the Mayor was walking down Jefferson Street when several large birds fell out of the sky, dead at his feet. He looked up and saw they had just flown through the exhaust stacks of the Vernian Sea Cannery, and that got him thinking, thinking that maybe we should start considering other sources of power while we can still see to the other side of the street. Build a windmill – yes, it must have moving parts. Small, 30 prims or less, or large, up to 125 prims, or both. Selected windmills may be purchased by the mayor for city use  because he likes having interesting things to put on vacant lots.

i wanted to document the large builds before they were returned, so had the gamma turned up on the lighting tab so you’d be able to see what was being looked to. first time with trying to do captures so was on a steep learning curve and the mouse and UI got into the frame a lot. happening to catch emperor crumb on a rare inworld appearance was perfect, you can see his log-out swirl going when i’m looking at him.

iShowU is a good cheap capture program  for mac with high instant gratification index.  iMovie easily trims the clips down to Not Boring length.
