Okay I have finally had a chance to rework part of the idea up. It could use a bit more reworking probably but this is just the first image of the new template idea.

Okay update on the theme a little bit… Found a PERFECT example of what I want to try and make this site look like.

    http://teamfannypack.com/

The style is very old fashioned newspaper and we can still get the babbagey background to it.

  • So I started playing around with underscores again to start a new “babbage” theme and was thinking if we wanted to be responsive (like work with multiple formats with the site) that I think or original design […]

Basically would like to try and get better newspapery images of Babbage Landmarks but the few I got and edited are not bad.

    • This has been a while, sorry for the delay. I have been playing around again and discovered that the regular Buddy Press sitewide activity actually works pretty well as the main portion of the site, which we mean I need to reorganize the theme to accommodate it, in truth since much of the site is focused on the stream it really should be front and center anyway. Finding out though that Facebook and Twitter feeds on the side are absolutely killing the front page. Will have to figure out a way to get them over there though as the Facebook page has grown in popularity significantly.

    • Okay so wow. Was just discussing that I needed to fix this and well found a perfect theme. Will try and get this worked out to look like my image soon. Still not overly fond of most Activity streams but as we are sort-of posting more on Facebook than we are on the original BAR then I think this should work for now, but will still look and see if I can find something better.

    • I like this! It’s readable and easy for outsiders to interpret and thereby to navigate. I’ll put my coveralls and gloves on and see if I can mess it up XD

    • So there is a small snag with this theme so far, which is mainly that the widgets I have on the front page are on every page. I would rather not have the middle ones on every page but if push comes to shove I could easily just put them to the side and have them in a sidebar instead. Otherwise the themeing is mostly done just need to get the background image to make it look like an old newspaper and we’ll be set, though even if we don’t have that this still looks nice as is.

    • YAY! Finally figured out how to use one of these widget managers and now all the front page widgets are on the front page only. Now all we have to do is basics I think and we can pre-release this puppy.

  • School is almost out for the summer and hopefully that means more time working on all my websites including this one. Going to dig through and once more find wordpress stuffs to make this the best site.

    Things […]

  • Yeah. I am rather over Drupal but WordPress is really frustrating me. So hard to get the simple things to work properly.

  • I’m beginning to question using wordpress here as it seems everything that we want to make it is a bit more difficult than it was in drupal so was wondering since we will need to completely redo the old site […]

    • I’ve been trying to get back over here to get more done, and hoping this idea would go away. Please tell me we’re over this. It is frustrating to adapt to WP, which is better suited to simple blogs; but this is nothing compared to the complete failure of Drupal. Please telll me this went away. I say hang in there and we’ll get there with WP. Drupal would be a nightmare.

  • So I’m finally understanding why it’s been so difficult to merge the comments and posts into one stream. Comments seem to be a separate entity that is not handled the same way posts are, which I find rather absurd. So everything else is treated like a post/page but comments are not. I suppose I understand why. If we treated every comment like a…[Read more]

  • Okay figured it out. If you paste it as “Plain Text” then add the italics afterwords then it won’t have the word wrap issue. It’s I think a typical thing when copy and pasting things with code already in it. Will still try to find something that will make it easier to copy and paste to keep formatting though while wordwrapping.

  • Thanks for testing that… also will look into the word wrap issue.

  • Do’h scratch that… forgot that they don’t really work well with comments. Back to the drawing board.

  • Great news! The widget I already had for Site Wide Activity seems to work properly now (must have been fixed in an update cause it didn’t used to be this good) So activity is fixed. Just not sure if people want to see profile changes or avatar changes. Either way this leaves me to be able to do other things so YAY!

  • I keep on looking at plugins and keep seeing all the really good features I want are pay for use. So thinking of just trying to figure out how to do some of these things myself.

  • Well looks like I should take a closer look at the friendship module, and/or profiles. Friend request from Garnet to Rayn worked but was… complicated. Getting to the user profile in order to accept request and getting to that request in general shouldn’t have been that difficult. Will look into simplifying the process.

  • So I was thinking Spam control would be good so I went and purchased Akismet… and all they do is block spam from being posted, rather than spammers from creating an account in the first place. So I ended my subscription and turned it off. I’m almost thinking the personal monitoring of new users is the best way to go still.

  • Update

Forums – For some reason on the dashboard you can’t access the forums but can easily do so through the main page. Will need to probably make some dashboard widget too for the forums.

  • So as you can see a little progress here thanks to Dee, but still not much on the other front so I will tell you what I am trying to achieve.

Activity Feed – Looking to create a similar activity feed like at […]

    • This is solid progress. I wouldn’t discard Groups just yet as I can see a future use for such things as roleplayers working on a story or event managers having a discussion space. Inworld groups are fine as long as everyone is inworld at the same time but we know timezones can make that difficult.

Menu – The Menu in which you access everything in wordpress seems… flawed. The main menu brings up what feels like just admin type controls to the site. While not a bad thing really it feels like it’s pulling people away from the site itself. I’m looking at a menu program right now but thinking it maynot be the way to go and may see about a main page menu/link-set to better access things inside the site.

    • Well done on catching up

Comments seem to be a separate entity that is not handled the same way posts are, which I find rather absurd. So everything else is treated like a post/page but comments are not. I suppose I understand why. If we treated every comment like a post then it would get it’s own page and that would just mean more bulk but it makes trying to combine them into a stream properly difficult. This does not mean I will stop trying… it just means it will take a bit more time than I hoped.

  • No I haven’t left. School has been taking up much of my time. But now that school is up I have decided to really look into making this website really good. I have been going through the videos on Lynda.com and […]

  • So I need to get some form of spam filterer. The site is not even technically open and already getting spammers adding themselves.
